I've often wrote posts like Jordan, saying "we
shouldn't be surprised," but this time surprise is not
the emotion I would use to characterize the reaction
to what happened in the museum.
It reminded me of the same reaction that I got when
reading recently with one of my students about just
how many deaths our invasion of America prompted.
Notice I'm not saying it's America's fault, but we
can't get away from the fact that our invasion of the
country is what prompted the loss of the artifacts.
Not just any artifacts, but those from the cradle of
our very civilization.
Sorry guys, but "we shouldn't be surprised" and "well
the Iraqis don't want a harp in their living room" is
not the kind of depth that this sort of situation
calls for.
And for those of you who might see some kind of
hypocrasy in my anti-war stance and this reaction, I
have absolutely no patience to explain why it is we
should be grieving.
