I wouldn't seriously consider qmail to begin with, the list of bugs is long.

Our crystal balls are steamy -- you'll have to describe your situation
(what exactly does the tarpit do, how exactly to other systems fetch) in
more detail.

And be sure you're running the latest fetchmail version (with patches)
from http://fetchmail.berlios.de/
