Yes, it does help.

It builds, links and fetchmail --version seems to work. I haven't  
exercised it more than that yet...

I don't remember, but it was part of my first false start at digging  
into the problem.

-DBIND_8_COMPAT appears to be the right solution - additional linker  
flags aren't necessary.
