DNS support is paperweight anyhow, and only useful in the special case
where the MX servers also provide the IMAP access. It may well be going
away in a future version.

If x86_64 doesn't provide res_search() then why bother? It's a library
problem, not a fetchmail problem, and should be taken up with the OS
vendor.
