In neither case are flags necessarily set (the Seen flag is the most
likely one).

The only potential problem with Michelle's solution is that any
messages already marked for deletion may be expunged.  Well, that and
I'm not sure it'll work - I'm confident your problem is that you're
using the fetchall option.
