I'm using fetchmail on Solaris (2.6 and 2.8) so it does work.

That looks almost like your firewall or something preventing access to
the POP3 server.

Can you telnet to the POP3 server, using telnet is often a quite
useful diagnostic aid.  'telnet mail1.seeo2.com 110' and see what
happens.
