John and all,
One aspect of my current job is maintaining servers for a larger number
of hosting clients. Security issues like this one are a huge pain.
Not only because of the increase in bandwidth the Gibe.C virus can be
as large as 2MB per email, but also the increase in support calls and
emails we receive.
We now are slowly getting in the habit of writing rules in our mail
server (sendmail/procmail) to block messages with viruses. It takes
some extra work, but it saves us quite a bit in support costs.
Eventually when we have the process down to a science (hopefully by the
end of the year), I might be able help CCIL get a similar process set
up. In the short term our choices are to either send out security
notices to our users or suggest that people using Windows operating
systems maintain an updated anti-virus program.
